The 80,000-dollar wall
Bitcoin slips below 80,000 dollars on the Asian wave, MSCI tightens its index rules and stablecoins move into bank payments.
Bitcoin has hit the bottom of its range. Overnight on 15 October it fell below 80,000 dollars for the first time in over a month, to a low of about 79,700, before climbing back towards 81,000. This is not an isolated crash: it is the point where three stories — macro risk, indices, payments — converge in the same week.
The risk coming from Asia
The immediate cause is the rush to risk-off. South Korea’s KOSPI lost 8% in a single session, with circuit breakers triggered, the Nikkei gave up 4.8% and semiconductor stocks led the decline. In the background is a US inflation reading hotter than expected, which put the possibility of a rate hike back on the table and brought almost a billion dollars of leveraged liquidations to the surface. Bitcoin has held the 80,000-87,000 dollar band it has defended since late September: the level to watch remains the 80,000 threshold.
The rules redraw the perimeter
MSCI has adopted the methodology proposed in August that makes «non-operating companies» ineligible for its global indices. Strategy, Metaplanet and Upexi had already been flagged as candidates for exclusion, while other crypto treasury companies remain on the waiting list. The final list is expected on 11 November, effective after the close on 30 November: if Strategy is dropped, JPMorgan estimates up to 2.8 billion dollars of selling pressure from passive funds. In the same round, the EBA has classified Circle’s USDC as the European Union’s first «significant e-money token»: from 12 November supervision of reserves, liquidity and capital passes to the European bank, while France’s ACPR keeps governance and ownership arrangements.
Stablecoins move into payments
The most concrete movement comes from infrastructure. Mastercard and BVNK have launched the Global Money Platform, which lets banks, fintechs and businesses hold multi-currency accounts with fiat and stablecoins, convert them in real time and spend the balances through Mastercard cards in over 130 countries. Stripe, with Plasma, has announced multi-currency stablecoin cards in more than 30 countries, aiming to pass 100 in 2027. Tether has invested in AIsa, a platform that lets AI agents pay for data, software and compute in stablecoins, with over 250,000 active agents.
Speed is no longer enough
The week closes with a shift in technical priorities. Vitalik Buterin has said, congratulating the Airbender team at ZKsync, that the race for zkEVM speed is «definitively won» and that the priority must move entirely to security, with three goals to be formally verified: the equivalence between arithmetisation and Ethereum’s specification, a cap on the ratio between prover cost and block gas, and the soundness of the proving system. After speed, the next game is verifiable trust: in a week when the price made noise, it is perhaps the most lasting signal.
